Exhibiting sustainably at trade shows is more important than ever, and the 8Rs provide a practical framework for reducing environmental impact: Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Repurpose, and Recycle.
By rethinking booth designs to prioritize modular and reusable materials, refusing single-use plastics, and reducing energy consumption, exhibitors can significantly lower their carbon footprint. Repairing and refurbishing existing assets extends their lifecycle, while repurposing materials adds creativity and sustainability to your presence. Recycling remains essential for managing unavoidable waste.

Simple Steps to Sustainability
Together with our host venue, Fira de Barcelona, ISE is committed to sustainable development and aspires to become a benchmark trade show for sustainability. To achieve this, we implement initiatives, projects, and actions designed to minimiSe our environmental impact while generating positive social and economic benefits.
ISE and Fira de Barcelona also work to extend this commitment to exhibitors, suppliers, and visitors. Our goal is to inform, raise awareness, and actively involve exhibitors and stand construction companies in creating a more sustainable and environmentally conscious experience at the Fira.
Before the Event
Stand Design: Embrace circular economy principles – use certified sustainable materials, rent furniture, minimise waste, and hire local suppliers.
Promotions: Go digital where possible, use recycled paper if printing is necessary, and opt for merchandise with a positive impact.
Transportation & Goods: Reduce plastic packaging, optimise shipments, and choose alternative-fuel vehicles.
Catering: Avoid single-use plastics, choose reusable kitchenware, order local, seasonal produce, and prevent food waste with accurate planning.
Travel: Opt for trains, eco-friendly hotels, and take advantage of Fira’s EV charging stations.
At ISE, we are committed to sustainability across all aspects of the event. The venue is powered 100% by renewable green energy, including solar, wind, hydro, biomass, tidal, geothermal, and biogas sources, ensuring a minimal environmental impact. In addition, we prioritize waste reduction with initiatives such as waste patrols on the show floor, the reusage of carpets, and recyclable badge holders to help reduce waste generation.
Sustainability is an integral part of how we plan and deliver the show. Working closely with our partners and exhibitors, we aim to reduce environmental impact, promote responsible design, and support the communities that host us.
As a proud supporter of the Better Stands Programme, we encourage exhibitors to move away from disposable, single-use stands and adopt high-quality, reusable structures. This initiative helps reduce waste, enhances safety and efficiency during build and breakdown, and supports a more sustainable future for the events industry.

To further promote circularity, ISE operates an onsite Donation Room in partnership with Fira de Barcelona and local association La Nau. Exhibitors and contractors can donate furniture, AV equipment, décor and other materials at the end of the show. La Nau then sorts and redistributes these items to social organisations across the region, ensuring they are reused where they are needed most.
