The residential integrator's role is changing faster than many people realise

For many years, residential integration was largely product-driven.

Screens, speakers and control systems formed the foundation of the business. Success often depended on technical expertise and the ability to deliver increasingly sophisticated installations.

That model is evolving.

As homes become more connected, technology decisions are beginning to influence much more than entertainment. Energy use, security, wellbeing, property value and even architectural design are all affected by choices made during residential projects.

Clients have noticed.

Increasingly, they are not simply asking which products to buy. They are asking broader questions.

How should infrastructure be designed?

Which systems are likely to remain relevant?

What should be prioritised?

How can technology support future lifestyles?

Those conversations extend far beyond equipment.

The shift mirrors changes that have already taken place in other professions. Architects, financial advisers and interior designers derive much of their value from expertise rather than products alone. Residential integration is beginning to move in the same direction.

At the same time, projects themselves are becoming more complex.

Networking, access control, lighting, HVAC, energy management, entertainment and artificial intelligence all intersect inside modern homes. Few clients have the time or knowledge to navigate those choices independently.

This creates an opportunity.

Integrators who understand collaboration, design and long-term planning can position themselves as trusted advisers rather than technical suppliers. Increasingly, their role resembles that of a consultant.

The move towards managed services is accelerating this transition. Remote monitoring, proactive maintenance and ongoing support are creating longer-term relationships between clients and technology partners.

As a result, many integrators are becoming involved earlier in projects and remaining involved long after installation has been completed.

The skills required are changing too.

Communication, project management and design awareness are becoming just as important as technical competence. Successful integrators increasingly need to understand the priorities of architects, interior designers, developers and homeowners.

At ISE, exhibitors including CrestronLegrand AV and ADI | Snap One + Control4 reflect the growing maturity of the residential market and the industry's shift towards experiences and services.

Integrated Systems Europe has become one of the places where residential professionals explore these changing expectations and develop new ways of working together.

Because the future leaders of the industry may not be the companies with the largest product portfolios.

They may be the ones with the strongest relationships.
