Protecting smart buildings from cyber risks

Protecting smart buildings from cyber risks
The integration of smart building technologies, driven by artificial intelligence, offers operational efficiencies but also significant cybersecurity risks. This was the core message from a panel discussion at ISE 2025 entitled 'Empowering People for a Safer Digital Future'.

The panel addressed practical cybersecurity challenges in building systems, access control, and network infrastructure, drawing a diverse audience seeking actionable strategies.  It was moderated by Shaun Reardon, Principal Cyber Security Consultant at DNV AS and supported by Hikvision.

The panel featured experts such as Chuck Davis, VP of Information Security at Hikvision, who emphasized the need for "cyber citizens" within facilities management teams to understand and mitigate risks. Irene Kaggwa, GIGA Program Manager at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), provided insights applicable to large-scale facilities projects, while Javvad Malik, Lead Security Awareness Advocate at KnowBe4, stressed the importance of secure access control, data protection, and network segmentation. Juan Soler, AI Security Engineer at NeuralTrust, highlighted the dual-edged nature of AI in facilities management, improving automation and security while introducing new vulnerabilities.

The discussion focused on tangible cybersecurity threats facing modern facilities, such as interconnected building management systems (BMS), access control, HVAC, and security cameras, which create potential entry points for cyberattacks. The financial and reputational consequences of data breaches were discussed, including compromised tenant data and security footage. Key topics included AI for predictive maintenance and enhanced security monitoring, the risk of AI-driven attacks, securing IoT devices and building automation systems, implementing robust access control and video surveillance systems, managing remote access risks, and developing incident response plans.

Building and facilities managers are increasingly on the front lines of cybersecurity, responsible for protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring occupant safety. The reliance on interconnected systems makes them prime targets for cyberattacks, which can disrupt operations, compromise security, cause financial losses, and damage reputation and tenant trust.

Several solutions were proposed to address these challenges, including implementing a layered security approach combining physical security, network segmentation, and robust access controls. Regularly updating firmware and software to patch vulnerabilities in building systems and IoT devices was also highlighted. Conducting regular security audits and penetration testing, developing and implementing incident response plans, providing cybersecurity training for facilities staff, mapping out connected devices, and implementing strong password policies and multi-factor authentication were recommended.

The ISE 2025 cybersecurity panel provided valuable insights, emphasising the importance of integrating cybersecurity into all aspects of building operations. Empowering staff with cybersecurity knowledge and implementing robust security measures are essential for ensuring a safe and secure digital future for smart buildings.
