Pro AV’s role in the global e-waste crisis: uncovering the hidden impact
E-waste is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world, with over 50 million tonnes generated annually. Yet, despite the scale of the problem, the professional AV industry’s share remains largely unquantified. Why? Because AV equipment is often bundled into broader categories like ICT (information and communications technology), making it difficult to isolate and measure its specific impact.
SAVe highlights the complexity of tracking AV-related e-waste; from digital signage and conferencing systems to audio processors and control devices, AV products are everywhere, but they’re rarely counted as a distinct category. This lack of visibility creates a blind spot in sustainability reporting and undermines efforts to reduce environmental harm.
The challenge is compounded by the fragmented nature of the AV supply chain. Products are designed, manufactured, distributed, installed, and disposed of by different entities, often across multiple countries. Without a unified framework for data collection and reporting, it’s nearly impossible to assess the full lifecycle impact of AV technologies.
Robust data needed
The organisation argues that the industry must move beyond anecdotal evidence and start building a robust data foundation. This means engaging manufacturers, integrators, and end-users in a shared commitment to track, report, and reduce e-waste. It also means advocating for clearer classification systems that recognise AV as a standalone category within global e-waste statistics.
SAVe is calling on AV professionals to embrace circular economy principles, prioritise repairability and reuse, and support extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes. These strategies can help minimise waste, extend product lifespans, and reduce the environmental footprint of AV installations.
As ISE continues to champion sustainability across the AV sector, this conversation is more urgent than ever. By acknowledging the gaps in our understanding and committing to better data, the industry can take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future.
