Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) and LANG have joined forces to bring to life the vision of artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen at the Fundació Joan Miró, a Barcelona museum dedicated to Miró’s works and legacy and a place for contemporary art scholarship. As this year’s winner of the Joan Miró Prize, Nguyen was awarded the opportunity to present his work in a solo exhibition in Barcelona.

ISE and LANG’s support illustrate how cutting-edge AV technology allied to artistic talent forms a connection that can produce unique immersive experiences, something that was ably illustrated at this year’s ISE show. The ISE 2024 exhibition hosted a live performance by Dutch AI/digital artist Jeroen van der Most at the Fira de Barcelona exhibition centre. This was preceded by a stunning projection mapping collaboration with Argentinian digital artist Sofia Crespo on the historic Casa Batlló building. In addition, ISE embarked on a third partnership with the Barcelona Llum Light Arts Festival to support its city-wide initiative.

“We are more than proud to once again be able to support the cultural community in Barcelona,” said Mike Blackman, Managing Director of Integrated Systems Europe. “With LANG we found the perfect backing to bring to life the social, political, and environmental commitment displayed in Tuan Andrew Nguyen’s poetic art projects. It is important to us to demonstrate how AV technology can be used to share visions.”

Tuan Andrew Nguyen. Our Ghosts Live in the Future

Since 2007, the Fundació Joan Miró has awarded the Joan Miró Prize every two years. An international jury made up of recognised experts in the field of contemporary art awards the prize to artists who, like Miró, work in a curious, innovative, committed and freedom-loving manner. For this year’s prize the jury pointed to Nguyen's “extraordinary depth and imagination” as qualities connecting him to Joan Miró, one of the criteria for assessing nominees.

Curated by Martina Millà, Head of Exhibitions at the Fundació Joan Miró, the exhibition Tuan Andrew Nguyen. Our Ghosts Live in the Future establishes a dialogue between Joan Miró and Alexander Calder, both proponents of Western art of the Cold War era. That dialogue is voiced by both the characters in Nguyen's films and installations, and the artworks and objects featured in these projects.

To bring these projects to life seven Panasonic 8K laser 3LCD projectors, seven 4K60p players with High Dynamic Range (HDR10) and various lenses with a range of 0.87 - 2.32 are provided by ISE and LANG.

Tuan Andrew Nguyen said: “The image quality allows for sharp detail and a level of clarity and lushness that corresponds with the emotional intensity of the stories being told. Only with this kind of equipment can visitors see the images as they were shot and designed to be seen.” Martina Millà, curator of the exhibition, added: “This way, the image is rightly shown as an integral part of the story telling, of the atmosphere of the scenes, which were so finely crafted in all films in the exhibition. Having these projectors and lenses really adds to the impact that the stories try to get across.”

Nguyen was born in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) in 1976. His parents left the country during what is known as the "boat people" migration and ended up settling in the United States. That early experience is at the core of the artist's creative output and practice, especially once he resolved to move back to Vietnam. Nguyen's videos have also appeared in numerous film festivals, as well as exhibitions including the fifth Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane (2006–07), Sharjah Biennial 14 (7 March–10 June 2019). and the 5th Aichi Triennale.

The temporary exhibition Tuan Andrew Nguyen. Our Ghosts Live in the Future runs until 24 September 2024. The Fundació Joan Miró is located at the foot of Montjuïc, close to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. More information about the exhibition and Fundació Joan Miró is on the museum's website.
