Connected classrooms, diverse learners

Gaurav Bradoo, Head of Product & Portfolio of Education, Logitech, describes how connected classroom technology can be adapted to address diverse education needs across different age groups, regions and modalities.

In today's educational landscape, the concept of the connected classroom is enhancing the way we approach teaching and learning. As we move towards a more integrated and technology-driven future, it's essential to understand the diverse needs that edtech must address across different regional and educational contexts.

One of the most striking aspects of the connected classroom is its adaptability. While the virtual learning space tends to be universally applicable, the physical classroom space varies significantly by region and culture.

For instance, looking at K-12 (primary and secondary) education, in the US, Japan, and mature European markets like the Nordics and Germany, there is widespread use of devices such as iPads with accessories, while other regions are still in the early stages of one-to-one device deployment. There are also differences in philosophy and pedagogical choices around screen time and the value of handwriting. These regional differences highlight the importance of understanding and supporting every modality of learning with the technology, including auditory and tactile methods even in the context of digital enabled learning. Tools like digital styluses enhance retention and motor skills, bridging the digital and physical worlds, while comfortable headsets sized to also fit smaller heads of younger learners, optimised for learning instead of music, enable transitions to a different learning modality.

Feedback-driven approach
Feedback from educators plays a crucial role in product development and messaging. By engaging in conversations with educators, we can better meet the specific needs of different markets and learning styles. This feedback-driven approach ensures that our products and solutions are tailored to support diverse learning modalities and pedagogical approaches.

In higher education, the trends are shifting towards ubiquitous content capture and streaming across various teaching environments. Universities are evolving from education providers to service providers, focusing on diverse student needs. This shift also reflects the changing job markets influenced by AI and innovation. Institutions are exploring things like micro-credentialing with courses catered directly to the needs of industries and the job market. The way students take notes and consume content in higher education has also evolved. Instead of transcribing lectures verbatim, students now focus more on discussion points, important moments, and even timestamps to go back and review in the recorded lecture. They then watch the recorded content at 1.25 - 1.5x speed for the parts they already understand and slow down on areas where they want to spend more time.

Changing needs
As we look towards the future, the connected classroom will continue to evolve, driven by advancements in technology and the changing needs of students and educators. For many K-12 schools, that evolution starts with the basics: in recent research from Logitech and THE Journal, 35% of educators said upgrading outdated classroom technology is their top priority for the next three years. By embracing these changes and focusing on the diverse needs of learners, we can create a more effective and inclusive learning environment that prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

To conclude, edtech is not just about integrating technology into the classroom; it's about creating a holistic and adaptable learning environment that supports diverse learning modalities and prepares students for the future. At Logitech, for example, we are committed to understanding and addressing these needs, ensuring that our products and solutions contribute to the ongoing evolution of education.
