Interactive retail is no longer about touchscreens

For years, interactive retail was almost synonymous with technology.

Touchscreens appeared in stores. Digital kiosks offered product information. Interactive displays promised to transform customer engagement.

Some succeeded.

Many became little more than expensive digital posters.

Today, retailers are taking a very different approach.

The most successful interactive experiences are no longer defined by the technology customers use. They are defined by how actively customers participate.

Instead of asking shoppers to interact with a screen, brands are creating environments that encourage exploration, discovery and social engagement. Physical stores are becoming places where people create content, attend demonstrations, receive personalised advice and experience products in ways that online shopping cannot replicate.

Technology supports these experiences, but rarely becomes the centre of attention.

That shift reflects changing consumer behaviour.

Customers increasingly expect retail environments to respond to their interests, remember their preferences and provide relevant information without creating unnecessary friction. The experience should feel intuitive rather than technological.

This is changing how retailers think about investment.

Interactive technology is becoming part of a broader experience strategy that includes digital signage, mobile engagement, audio, lighting and content management working together.

Rather than installing isolated digital features, retailers are creating connected environments capable of evolving alongside customer expectations.

Recent flagship stores from leading global brands increasingly demonstrate this direction. Flexible digital environments allow product launches, seasonal campaigns and community events to share the same physical space without major redesign.

At ISE 2027, exhibitors including BrightSign, Samsung Electronics and Shure reflect this evolution. Content platforms, display technologies and professional audio solutions are helping retailers deliver more immersive and responsive customer experiences while maintaining operational flexibility.

Importantly, interaction is becoming more human.

Store associates are increasingly supported by technology rather than replaced by it. Personal consultations, demonstrations and expert advice become more valuable when combined with connected digital systems that provide timely information and personalised content.

For retailers, the objective is not simply to make stores more digital.

It is to make them more engaging.

As online shopping continues to handle routine purchases, physical retail is increasingly focused on creating experiences that justify the visit.

That makes interaction a business strategy rather than a technology feature.

This is one reason why experiential retail, digital engagement and customer journey design continue to be growing themes at Integrated Systems Europe, where retailers and technology providers are exploring new ways to connect physical and digital experiences.

The future of interactive retail may involve more technology than ever before.

Ironically, the best experiences will probably make customers notice it less.
