There is no simple answer to the question “what is the most suitable number of subwoofers for reproducing low frequencies in a room” because it heavily depends on the intended use. In some cases—such as studios—it’s more important to optimize the single listening point, so it’s better to work with a single source. In others—like home theaters—it’s more useful to have a uniform distribution, even at the expense of other listening qualities. Moreover, the acoustic treatment of the room plays a significant role in this decision and is a very important variable in the equation. Various case studies from the professional and consumer worlds will be presented, analyzing the most suitable methods for each case, explaining their pros and cons to provide useful and applicable references.
