The Digital Campfire: mutual understanding and learning in the 21st century
Philipp Ewerling
Senior Software Developer & Interaction Designer

Abstract:
Since ancient times the campfire has been not only a place for warming, but also a place for communication. Anthropological studies prove that conversations at campfires have contributed successfully to the development of our culture. Nowadays, in our globalised world personal meetings are becoming increasingly scarce and common tables are fading away. Digital communication cannot compensate this loss: an emoji cannot replace a human smile. We seek to develop digital solutions that support personal communication between people placing emphasis on personal encounters and the exchange of information between people. A digital campfire as a platform for mutual understanding and learning in our era.
