Drone shows continue to expand what's possible

In the past year, drone light shows have moved from a novelty to a staple in the live events world, the technology and scale of these performances have grown exponentially, creating ever-more mesmerising spectacles worldwide.

Here are some shows that either set new records or pushed the envelope in terms of what can be achieved with drone technology.

Charming Chongqing drone show

Vietnam doubles 2024 Guinness World Record

A year ago, UVify set the Guinness World Record for ‘most unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) airborne simultaneously’ with 5,293 drones. That milestone did not stand for long.

On 28 April 2025, Vietnam’s ‘50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification’ drone light show in Ho Chi Minh City was crowned the same title. This time with more than double the number of drones (10,518) supplied by Chinese firm DAMODA. The show displayed national emblems, historical scenes, and city skylines.

DAMODA breaks its own record

Almost immediately, DAMODA surpassed its own record at the artistic ‘Charming Chongqing’ light show in China. In a staggering 11,787-drone display, the show broke the record for ‘the largest aerial image formed by multirotor/drones’ in Guinness World Records on 17 June 2025, cementing DAMODA’s record book dominance.

Elevating LEGO’s World Play Day

In Shanghai, CQQJ and SKYMAGIC teamed up with LEGO to activate its World Play Day campaign with a bang. Against the Shanghai skyline, 1,200+ drones were sent into the sky in June 2025 to create wondrous scenes such as a cat unloading LEGO blocks, a robot figure, as well as a depiction of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower rocket launching into the night sky.

Storytelling matters

While in no way comparable in scale to some of the other entries on this list, the AFC Champions League Elite 2025 drone show in Jeddah certainly left an impression. Powered by Cyber Drone, the 950-drone show linked the cultural roots of Saudi Arabia to the drama and excitement of the grand final match in May 2025 – right above a packed stadium of over 58,000 fans.

Superman takes flight

It wasn't the first time Hollywood had incorporated drone shows in its marketing campaigns, but the drone show of Superman reaching for the Gateway Arch on 4 July seemed different. Co-organised by Fantasy Drone Shows, Celebrate St Louis, and Warner Brothers, the special 400-drone light show was a short but spectacular reminder of how drone shows can be integrated into surrounding architecture and pop culture moments.

Ringing in the new year with laser drones

New Year celebrations are no strangers to innovative technology. Yet the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah introduced a world first: drones equipped with high-powered lasers. Produced by Skymagic, the show combined 1,400 drones with 47 custom laser drones to create vivid patterns in the sky. The multisensory experience was complemented with a firework show and a fully synchronised soundtrack, marking a new era in drone artistry.
