Tech Tour: Barcelona Supercomputing Center: New MareNostrum 5
Friday 2 February, 12:00-14:00
The emblematic MareNostrum 5 is the next-generation quantum supercomputer at the new 12,000sqm headquarters of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).
The MareNostrum 5 is a new EuroHPC pre-exascale supercomputer that uses speeds of up to 314 petaFLOPs (roughly translating to 314 million billion calculations per second) with 200 petabytes of storage and 400 petabytes of active archive. It is 15 to 20 times faster than its predecessor, MareNostrum 4 Quantum computer, housed inside the iconic Torre Girona Chapel at Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
MareNostrum 5 has secured its position in the prestigious TOP500 list, claiming the eighth spot alongside the LUMI and Leonardo EuroHPC supercomputers, which maintain their positions among the world's foremost powerful and environmentally sustainable computing systems.
“Guests on this exclusive ISE Tech Tour will hear all about the development of MareNostrum 5 for institutions to perform science research and development and plan for future pathways,” says Oriol Riu Valenti, MareNostrum Visits Manager at Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
“BSC opens its doors to new areas of research such as personalised medicine, artificial intelligence algorithms, initiatives such as the Human Brain Project, exploring ChatGPT, resource management and even predictive network management,” adds Valenti.
Guests will see how MareNostrum5 is designed to optimise waste heat and cooling inside its new home that also accommodates staff areas, 35 meeting rooms, two training rooms and an auditorium.
Barcelona Supercomputing Center works closely with a growing network of organisations using high-powered computing and over 150 research projects in areas such as astrophysics and materials physics to biomedicine and in engineering and industry.
This ISE Tech Tour visiting MareNostrum 5 at Barcelona Supercomputing Center takes place on Friday 2 February from 12:00 to 14:00.
Tech Tour registration opens in January.
ISE Tech Tours are organised in collaboration with Catalan Audiovisual Cluster, an established network of companies and institutions aimed at connecting culture, economy and industry.
