Stand Design AwardsOrganised by EXHIBITOR Magazine

Overall description

Stand Design AwardsCreated by Integrated Systems Europe to acknowledge ISE exhibitors and their stand-design efforts, the Stand Design Awards are managed solely by EXHIBITOR magazine, an award-winning print and online magazine featuring best practices for trade show marketing.

A product of EXHIBITOR Media Group (, EXHIBITOR magazine has hosted its own highly respected and impartially organised Exhibit Design Awards for more than 30 years. The ISE 2020 Stand Design Awards followed in this same impartial vein and enlisted a group of highly esteemed designers and marketers, who have no connection to the show and its exhibitors, to jury the competition.

Every stand on the ISE show floor was automatically entered in the free competition and judged on site during ISE 2020. However, each stand that had previously won an ISE Stand Design Award and whose design employed roughly the same size footprint and/or reused approximately 50 percent or more of the previous winning stand was ineligible for the competition. Thus, companies may win multiple awards over numerous years, but the same stand may only win once.

Categories and winners

Stands were judged in four size-based categories, and the winners were as follows:

  • Small: 49 sqm or fewer – Rocketsign (Darklight Technology)
  • Medium: 50–199 sqm – LINDY-Elektronik
  • Large: 200–399 sqm – BenQ Europe
  • XL: 400 sqm or more – NEC Display Solutions

EXHIBITOR magazine’s editor, Travis Stanton, along with senior writer and awards-program manager Linda Armstrong, were on site for the duration of the show and completed the initial round of judging to select the finalists.

Stanton has served as editor of EXHIBITOR magazine since 2005. He has written and spoken about stand-design trends at numerous trade shows and conferences, including EXHIBITORLIVE in Las Vegas, EuroShop in Dusseldorf, Germany, and the International Federation of Exhibition and Event Services’ world summits in both Cape Town and New Delhi. He also launched EXHIBITOR magazine’s Expo Awards competition in 2010, which has honored the most exceptional experiential designs at the four world expos since, held in Shanghai; Milan; Yeosu, South Korea; and Astana, Kazakhstan. In addition, Stanton has juried multiple editorial and design competitions, including the American Society of Business Publication Editors’ Azbee Awards and the Western Publications Association’s Maggie Awards.

Armstrong has written about exhibit marketing and stand design for more than 15 years and has juried multiple editorial and design competitions, including the American Society of Business Publication Editors’ Azbee Awards. In addition, she has managed EXHIBITOR Magazine’s Exhibit Design Awards, an internationally recognized stand-design competition now in its 34th year. In this role, she has selected world-renowned design experts to jury the competitions and has been part of every jury process since 2002.

During ISE 2020, the following group of world-renowned designers and marketers were on site to judge the finalists. Jurors scored each finalist based on the assessment criteria, and the stand with the highest point total in each entry category was declared its winner.

Assessment Criteria

Jurors considered how well each stand:

  • communicated the name of the exhibiting company/product/brand,
  • demonstrated effective design realization/fabrication,
  • enlisted colour as a design tool,
  • delivered cohesive and effective graphics,
  • offered clear organisation/wayfinding,
  • presented an effective lighting design,
  • integrated technology (if applicable),
  • employed the allotted space,
  • presented a current (on-trend) presence,
  • communicated key messages,
  • employed scale, and
  • delivered an overall impactful presence.

Up to 10 finalists were selected in each category. Finalists were notified on the show floor and presented with a plaque on Tuesday 11 February. The Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday 13 February, where the four winners (one per category) were announced and presented with a trophy.

ISE promoted the winners via various newsletters and channels, and EXHIBITOR magazine publicised the winners via an official press release, social-media posts, and at
