New opportunities for the Smart Home Technician are growing when it comes to alternative energy and storage. Battery technologies are becoming more efficient, resilient, robust and lower in cost. Homeowners and integrators who are prepared to take advantage of the advancements in energy storage will benefit from these changes.

Photovoltaic solar, wind, hydrogen fuel cells and electric vehicles are now seen as useful ways to power the residence and supply excess power to the grid. Utility companies are rewarding their customers who can provide power as needed not just when generated and are establishing requirements to that end.

The term “distributed energy resources” (DER) has become important in the vocabulary of the serving utilities, and the smart home technician must be prepared to take advantage of this new reality.

Batteries have decreased in price and the number new options for in home storage has never been better and many incentives are available for those able to participate in these programs. We will cover the regulations imposed by the National Electrical Code and serving utilities to ensure a system that serves the customer’s needs and is safe and reliable.
