NIS2: a cybersecurity wake-up call for pro AV
ISE InsightsAs digital transformation accelerates across Europe, the pro AV and systems integration industry finds itself at a critical juncture. The European Union’s updated cybersecurity directive, NIS2, which came into force in October 2024, is reshaping the regulatory landscape for sectors deemed essential to societal functioning, including many within the AV ecosystem.
Originally introduced in 2016, the Network and Information Systems (NIS) Directive aimed to bolster cybersecurity across critical infrastructure. NIS2 significantly expands this scope, now encompassing medium and large enterprises in both public and private sectors, including AV companies that support organisations such as public institutions, broadcasters, cultural venues, and event organisers. The directive mandates stricter cybersecurity protocols, incident reporting, third-party risk management, and accountability at the executive level.
For the pro AV industry, this is more than a compliance issue, it’s a strategic imperative.
AV systems today are deeply integrated with IT networks, cloud platforms, and IoT devices. From digital signage and live streaming to remote conferencing and smart building controls, AV technologies are increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats. A breach in an AV system can compromise sensitive data, disrupt public communications, and even threaten national security if tied to government or emergency services.
Under NIS2, AV providers serving public sector clients or operating critical infrastructure must now meet rigorous cybersecurity standards. This includes implementing robust access controls, conducting regular risk assessments, and ensuring staff are trained in cybersecurity best practices. Failure to comply can result in substantial fines and reputational damage.
But beyond compliance, NIS2 presents an opportunity for the AV industry to lead in digital resilience. Forward-thinking companies are already investing in secure-by-design solutions, partnering with cybersecurity experts, and embedding threat detection into their platforms. Integrators and manufacturers who prioritise cybersecurity will not only meet regulatory demands but also gain a competitive edge in a market increasingly defined by trust and reliability.
Moreover, NIS2 encourages cross-sector collaboration, urging AV professionals to work closely with IT departments, legal teams, and external consultants to build comprehensive security strategies.
As AV continues to evolve from hardware-centric setups to cloud-enabled ecosystems, cybersecurity must be woven into every layer of design and deployment. NIS2 is not just a legal framework, it is a call to action for the AV industry to embrace its role in safeguarding Europe’s digital future.
In the words of cybersecurity experts, cybersecurity is no longer optional - it’s a necessity. For AV professionals, that necessity is now a mandate.
