The convergence of AV and IT is presenting both substantial opportunities and intricate challenges within the rapidly evolving pro AV sector. With the proliferation of networked systems, cybersecurity has become a critical concern for organisations involved in providing or utilising AV solutions.

At ISE 2025, Shaun Reardon (Principal CyberSecurity Consultant at DNV AS) and Graeme Scott (Global Training Manager at HARMAN) shared key cybersecurity tips during a discussion on the AVIXA Xchange LIVE stage. Based on this discussion and extensive AVIXA research, here are seven cybersecurity insights every AV professional should know.

Cyber

1. Cybersecurity is not optional

The days when AV systems were isolated from digital threats are over. As Sean Reardon noted, “When AV lives on the network, it becomes an IT asset – and IT assets must be protected.” Pro AV professionals must approach every project with a cybersecurity-first mindset, integrating security considerations at every stage, from design to deployment.

2. Understand the threat landscape

Cyber threats are not just theoretical; they are real and increasingly sophisticated. Threat actors target AV end points, control systems, and the broader network. According to AVIXA, understanding the range of risks – from ransomware to data breaches and denial-of-service attacks – is fundamental for every AV integrator and user.

3. Device management and patch updates matter

Many AV devices are left vulnerable because firmware and software updates are neglected. Reardon commented: “Unpatched devices are the low-hanging fruit for attackers.” Regularly updating hardware and software and managing devices with strong credentials and role-based access are cornerstones of robust cyber hygiene.

4. Network segmentation is your friend

Placing AV systems on separate, segmented networks limits exposure and helps contain potential breaches. AVIXA recommends working closely with IT teams to ensure AV devices are not lumped into the general corporate network, but instead are granted only the necessary, minimal access.

5. User training is as important as technology

Cybersecurity is as much about people as it is about technology. “The most sophisticated system is only as secure as its least informed user,” warned Reardon. Investing in regular training and awareness programmes for staff and clients can drastically reduce the risk of human error – often the weakest link in security.

6. Plan for incident response

No system is entirely immune to breaches. Develop and document clear incident response plans. Know who to call, what actions to take, and how to communicate in the event of a security incident. AVIXA’s resources include templates and best practices to help AV teams prepare for the unexpected.

7. Stay current and collaborate

Cybersecurity is a moving target. Standards and threats evolve rapidly. Engage with the Pro AV community, attend events such as ISE, leverage AVIXA’s education, and collaborate with trusted IT partners. As Sean Reardon put it, “Security is a journey, not a destination. Stay curious, stay informed, and stay vigilant.”

The integration of AV and IT brings unparalleled opportunity, but also responsibility. By embracing these seven essentials, pro AV professionals can deliver powerful, secure solutions in a digitally connected world.
