Science and Snake Oil: deconstructing the high performance audio signal path

What does 'accurate' mean? What defines 'great sound'? Why do different manufacturers all say that their system is 'the best'? Though audio should be defined by objective science, the nature of reproducing the recorded arts means that notions of quality are mostly subjective. This fun and interactive session will separate science from snake oil and from the perspective of the entire signal path from source codec to room acoustics, and define the elements that come together to produce really great audio.

Advanced Lighting Design for Home Cinema

Lighting is a vital element of cinema room design, contributing to aesthetics, safety, image contrast, image colour uniformity, and creating a more social space. When most people think about engineering a home cinema, discussions revolve around speakers, screens, immersive audio codecs, and room EQ. Whilst all are critical, these elements seem relatively insignificant compared to engineering the actual room itself correctly. This course explores how to correctly design lighting in high performance AV spaces to maximise all of the above elements.

Avoiding Acoustical Mistakes

Explore what happens when acoustic design aspects are either ignored or intentionally eliminated from a project. Learn the importance of addressing common acoustic and noise issues and concerns in buildings of all types, through both an introduction to general acoustic concepts and a series of case studies ranging from a single-family home to a large event space.
Addressing the quality and control of sound in the design of commercial and residential structures is steadily increasing in importance as many buildings and homes are completed with little to no attention given to acoustics and noise control. Unfortunately, when this happens, it is the end users who suffer – whether it is from excessively reverberant or loud spaces, lack of acoustic privacy between rooms or being inundated with noise and vibration from the variety of equipment serving the building. Compromised acoustics also negatively affect intelligibility, imaging and other aspects of audio programs included within a given space.

Death Match: HDMI v HDBaseT v AV-over-IP v Fibre

This panel discussion assembles leading experts in HDMI, HDBaseT, AV-over-IP and optical fibre to discuss the pros and cons of each technology for AV extension and distribution. New AV formats like HDR and 8K highlight the need for increased bandwidth, but on the other hand, compression could come in and save us all the trouble. Is the matrix switch with point-to-point outputs better, or should AV be on a configured network? And if so, what speed? Is light better than electrical wire? What about image and sound quality, compatibility, and the need for a future upgrade path? This panel, moderated by CEDIA's David Meyer, resident subject matter expert on HDMI, will address these challenges and more. Who will win…?
